The thing about working in the horse industry… from a horse person

kelsey interviewingHad you told me a year ago I’d be where I am today professionally, I’m not sure I would have believed you. Kaitlyn and I started developing the idea for this website a year ago. At the time she was working in the horse industry, but I wasn’t (as much as I wanted to). I was starting to look for an opening to get back in though.

Earlier this year though, it happened. I found my dream job.

I found an online posting for a Marketing position with Cavalor North America, a premium horse feed and supplement brand based in Belgium (with a US office). After two interviews, I was offered the job and I accepted. Not only did the position seem like a perfect fit for my professional and technical background, there is a lot of opportunity to grow the company. My entire career has been spent in small companies and startups – I love helping companies grow.

But all this leads me to my next point. When you really love what you do, it’s hard to anything but that. I find myself working all the time, but mostly because I’m so passionate about the work. It’s hard to step away each day because I’m immersed in an industry I love. I’m around horse people, talking about horses and giving horse owners the tools to improve the health and performance of their favorite animals. What could be better?

You may have noticed that over the past few months ECN hasn’t posted new articles as regularly as we did previously. That’s my fault and this is our commitment to changing that. Going forward we will continue to interview people in the equine industry. Have someone you think would be great to interview? Let us know! I will also write about my experiences – you can see if a job in this industry is what you want. Have something specific you want to know about? Don’t be afraid to reach out and tell us!

For now, here’s my first big video project from this new position. Enjoy!

Kelsey has a B.A. and M.A. from Elon University, and a deep love for horses and digital media. As a lifelong horse lover, ECN was built to help college students and young professionals realize the endless potential for a rewarding career with horses.
